Painted Signs - Example of bubbles and the cause

  • The paint completely encapsulates the sign so great care must be taken if you drill holes or screw into the sign.
  • You are creating a weak point where water can penetrate, which will in turn cause the paint to bubble.
  • If you have to drill a hole for fixing, then make sure you fill the hole with a sealant such as CT1 before putting in the screws or bolts

The photos below give an example of a painted sign with problem bubbles, which we collected to investigate the problem.

We sanded the sign back to bare wood and it became clear what had happened. Three holes had been drilled into the back of the sign. You can clearly see how wet this area of the sign had become. We turned the wood over and the water penetration was clearly visable on the front. This is without doubt why the paint had bubbled.

Water had penetrated through to the front causing the bubbling.

If you have to drill a hole for fixing then make sure you fill the hole with a sealant such as CT1 before putting in the screws or bolts.
Alternatively, please ask us to drill the holes or attach the fittings for you.
