Granite Memorials & Plaques

Granite is an exceptionally durable and beautiful natural stone, renowned for its stunning appearance when polished to a high shine. It is perfect for creating long-lasting memorials and plaques that stand the test of time

We offer granite in four thicknesses: 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, and 30mm, available in a selection of ten elegant colors. Each piece can be custom-made to your exact specifications.

The 30mm granite will have the top and sides polished, whereas on the thinner granite memorials the sides will be cut and honed. These look particularly attractive with a sandblasted edge border. The Celtic grey granite can also have the whole surface blasted for a natural matt finish.

It is important to us, to make your granite memorial just the way you want it.

The Lettering

We can engrave or sandblast the lettering in a variety of fonts - click here. For smaller lettering it is best to choose simple fonts such as Arial, Bookman Old Style, Eurostyle, Guody Old Style and Gill Sans. If you are not sure ask our designer to show you proofs in a couple of fonts.

Lots of choice with paint colours with black, white, gold and silver being the most popular. We can paint the lettering or indeed the images in more than one colours. Cost £15 per extra colour.

For very small letters we can use the impact engraver. This only shows up well on the darker granites as these letters can be paint filled white or gold. This style of engraving is not as sharp as the deep engraved. Another option for small text is laser etching. This is sharp but cannot be paint filled. Only suitable for dark granite.

Sandblasting Surface for a Honed Finish

To achieve the matt, honed finish required by some churchyards, we can sandblast the gloss off granite memorial tables. This process removes the polished surface, resulting in a more subdued appearance. The Amber White Granite looks particularly effective good if using this process. Dark Grey and Celtic Grey also work well. Another alterntive is to use Green Lakeland slate which is almost as hard as granite and only available as honed.

Algae Growth - It is important to understand that sandblasted, or honed finished granite, while producing the desired matt finish, can be more susceptible to algae growth. The increased surface area of a honed finish provides more places for moisture and organic matter to reside, creating an ideal environment for algea to grow. Regular cleaning is therefore recommended to maintain the memorials appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Granite Memorials

Why is granite suitable for a memorial plaque?

Granite is an exceptionally strong and durable natural stone, making it an excellent choice for an outdoor memorial. It withstands changing weather conditions well and can retain its appearance for many years with occasional cleaning.

What colours of granite are available?

Our granite memorials are available in a choice of ten colours, ranging from polished black and darker greys to lighter and more naturally patterned stones. Please bear in mind that granite is a natural material, so its colour, markings and pattern will vary slightly from one piece to another.

What thicknesses are available?

We offer granite in 10mm, 15mm, 20mm and 30mm thicknesses. The best option will depend on the size of the memorial, its intended position and the appearance you would like. Our friendly team can advise you if you are unsure.

Can you make a granite memorial to a custom size?

Yes. We can cut the granite to virtually any size within our available price brackets. This allows you to choose dimensions that suit the wording, design and location of your memorial rather than being restricted to a small selection of standard sizes.

What finish will the granite memorial have?

Most granite memorials have a polished face. On 30mm granite, the top and sides are also polished. The sides of thinner granite memorials are normally cut and honed. A sandblasted border can be added to create an attractive contrast around the polished surface.

Can you provide a matt or honed granite memorial?

Yes. We can sandblast the polished surface of selected granite to create a more subdued matt or honed appearance. This finish is sometimes preferred or required by churchyards. Amber White, Dark Grey and Celtic Grey granite are particularly suitable for this treatment.

Does honed granite require more cleaning?

A sandblasted or honed surface can be more susceptible to algae than highly polished granite because its textured surface retains more moisture and organic matter. Regular gentle cleaning will help keep the memorial looking its best.

Can the memorial wording be deeply engraved?

Yes. Wording can be deeply engraved or sandblasted into the granite and then paint filled to make it clearly visible. Black, white, gold and silver are among the most popular lettering colours, although other colours are available.

What lettering style is best for a granite memorial?

We offer a wide selection of fonts. Simple, clear fonts are generally best for smaller lettering, while more decorative styles can work well for names, headings or larger inscriptions. We can prepare a proof so that you can see how the chosen lettering will look before the memorial is made.

Can very small lettering be added to granite?

Yes. For particularly small wording, we may recommend impact engraving or laser etching. Impact-engraved letters can be paint filled and work best on darker granite. Laser-etched text is sharp and suitable for dark granite, but it cannot be paint filled.

Can I use more than one lettering colour?

Yes. The wording and images can be finished in more than one colour. An additional charge applies for each extra paint colour used.

Can an image or decorative design be included?

Yes. Images, motifs, borders and decorative elements can be incorporated into the memorial design. You can choose from our standard images, supply your own suitable artwork or ask our designer to help create an appropriate layout.

Can you help me choose suitable memorial wording?

Yes. Choosing the right words for a memorial can be difficult. You are welcome to use your own personal inscription, and we also have a selection of memorial wording and inscription ideas to help you. There are no fixed rules—the wording should feel right for you and the person being remembered.

Will I receive a design proof before the memorial is made?

Yes. We can prepare a design proof showing the wording, font, layout and any images. This gives you the opportunity to check names, dates, spelling and the overall appearance before production begins.

Are granite memorials suitable for churchyards and cemeteries?

Granite memorials may be suitable for churchyards, cemeteries, gardens and other remembrance areas. However, individual burial grounds can have their own rules covering the permitted material, size, colour and finish. We recommend checking with the relevant churchyard or cemetery before ordering.

How do I order a bespoke granite memorial?

You can request a quotation, order through our online shop, contact us by telephone or email your requirements to our team. Please include the approximate size, granite colour, wording, preferred lettering colour and details of any image you would like to add.
