Sign Posts Wood, Steel and Aluminium

This page displays a selection of our post designs. Our carpenters and blacksmiths also create custom designs to order. We primarily use oak and iroko for our wooden posts. Oak is a beautiful, strong, and durable wood. Iroko, similar to teak, is naturally oily and requires less maintenance. For painted posts, we use sapele, a stable and sustainable hardwood. Softwood posts are also available at a lower price point.

In addition to wood, we offer a range of metal posts, including hand-forged steel and wrought iron, as well as aluminum. Our aluminum posts are available in round or square shapes, various diameters, and any length.

How Deep to Bury a Sign Post

General Guidelines

  • The Third Rule: A common rule of thumb is to bury at least one-third of the post's total length underground. For example, a 6-foot post would have 2 feet buried.

  • Adjust for Height: Taller signs need deeper post holes for stability.

  • Frost Line: In areas with freezing winters, posts should extend below the frost line to prevent movement from freeze-thaw cycles.

  • Soil Type: Loose or sandy soils require deeper holes than clay or rocky soils.

  • Wind: High-wind areas may need deeper holes for added support.

Hole Size

  • Diameter: Holes should be about three times the width of the post. This allows room for concrete or gravel backfill.

  • Depth: In addition to the post depth, add a few inches of gravel at the bottom of the hole for drainage.

Additional Tips

  • Concrete: Using concrete to secure the post in the hole provides the greatest stability.

  • Tamping: When backfilling, tamp the soil or concrete firmly to prevent settling.

  • Plumb: Ensure the post is perfectly vertical before securing it in place.
