House Signs Made From Wood

At The Sign Maker, our skilled carpenters can use a variety of timbers to create high quality house signs, with the three most popular being Oak, Sapele, and Iroko. Oak, renowned for its beauty, requires regular maintenance to prevent blackening. Iroko, similar to teak, contains natural oils that reduce the need for upkeep. Sapele, with its mahogany-like appearance and rich red colour, also needs proper care to maintain its look.

Since we process the timber on-site, we can create your wooden house sign in any size. We can join boards for larger signs and craft various shapes, including oval, round, or even more intricate designs. For instance, we once created a wooden sign shaped like Jersey. The lettering is laser-engraved into the wood or, for larger signs, created using a CNC router.

Wooden House Sign in Beautiful Iak

Wooden House Signs in Beautiful Oak

Oak is an exceptional choice for wooden signs due to its natural beauty, strength, and durability. Renowned for its majestic appearance, oak is a favourite timber at The Sign Maker, frequently used for both residential and larger commercial signs. Its distinctive grain, rich colour, and unique textures make every sign one-of-a-kind, ensuring it stands out and leaves a lasting impression. Beyond aesthetics, oak's substantial weight and durability mean it can withstand the elements and, with proper maintenance, last a lifetime. Whether for a home or business, an oak sign offers a timeless, elegant solution that blends practicality with enduring charm.

Iroko Wood Sign - Oiled

Iroko Wood House Signs

The stability of Iroko makes it a highly sought-after timber for house signs and larger wooden signage. Often compared to teak in appearance, Iroko is a dense, stable hardwood with a naturally high oil content, making it one of the best choices for outdoor wooden signs.

Its durability allows it to withstand the elements, even when left untreated. However, applying oil a couple of times a year enhances its appearance and helps maintain a fresh, like-new look, ensuring your sign remains both functional and visually appealing for years to come.

Sapele Wood House Sign

Sapele - A Timber Similar to Mahogany

Sapele wood, with its rich, lustrous, and variable reddish-brown colour, offers a beautiful mahogany-like appearance. Sapele is a highly stable timber and resistant to movement over time and remarkably, it is even harder than oak. These qualities make Sapele a good choice for house signs, offering both visual appeal and resilience at an excellent value. Its smooth, dense surface also makes it ideal for painted wooden signs, as it holds paint exceptionally well, ensuring vibrant, long-lasting finishes.

Chestnut Wood Sign

Wooden Signs - Chestnut - Highly Durable

Sweet chestnut, often dubbed the "poor man's oak," is viewed by us as a good alternative to oak. Despite its similar appearance and dense grain, it boasts a high tannin content, rendering it highly durable. While not as structurally robust as oak, it serves superbly for wooden house signs. Basically it looks good for longer and is cheaper.

Reverse Lasered Oak Sign

Driftwood Effect Wooden Signs

These are very unusual signs and really do show the grain of the wood. The letters are slightly proud. The background is either sandblasted or reverse-lasered to create a driftwood effect.  We use the following timbers - Iroko, Red Cedar, Oak or Sapele (similar to mahogany)   Oak has the most pronounced driftwood grain effect but the least depth to the letters.

Cherry Wood Sign

Cherry Wood House Signs

This lovely timber, often difficult to obtain,  reddens when exposed to sunlight, and the colour improves with age. It has a fine, straight, close grain which resists warping and shrinking. As with most timber, it needs to be well maintained. We treat as standard with a long-life satin varnish
