Memorials, Plaques & Crosses made in Wood
Pieces crafted with wood have a natural softness to them, regardless of the timber used. This is what makes wood an excellent choice for a high quality memorial, and one that choose to recommend.
Each timber has a unique set of characteristics, enabling you to choose the one that is right for you. Additionally, we can personalise a memorial by design or by finish (for example with paint) - we have crafted some incredibly special pieces in loving memory of those who have passed away.
Handcrafted here in our Devon workshop, our wooden signs and memorials are known to be some of our best pieces, so you can rest assured that you are in safe hands with our award winning and highly skilled craftsmen and designers.
Oval, Round & Heart Shaped Wooden Plaques
These beautiful wooden plaques can be made in a variety of sizes using Oak or Iroko. For outside use Iroko is often considered preferable as it is full of oil. Oak is also used as it is very beautiful but must be well maintained to stay looking at its best. Wording and images are engraved into the wood using our latest laser technology. The results are simply stunning.
Wooden Memorial Plaques
Our wooden memorial plaques are very elegant and very beautiful. Plaques made from wood feel very natural and are often more appropriate to use than the rather formal engraved brass. Oak memorials are beautiful but for least maintenance we suggest iroko. Another low maintenance option is Douglas Fir. They can all be fitted with a wooden or metal tree stake.
Engraved Wooden Crosses
Crafted with classic Oak, or Iroko - similar to teak, these memorial signs stand out for all the right reasons and would honour the life and legacy of someone perfectly. Handcrafted in four different sizes, these crosses make for simple yet beautiful memorial pieces. The lettering and images of your choosing can be lasered directly into the wood or onto a plate which is then mounted onto the cross - both options, though different, deliver the same quality appearance.
At The Sign Maker, we can also have painted hardwood crosses, delivering a memorial that may feel a little more personal to you or in line with the vision that you had. Woodland & Natural Burials
Some woodland burial sites require memorials to be as natural as possible, which in most cases involves having a memorial plaque that is entirely wood with no metal fixtures. Our talented craftsmen can craft bespoke wooden memorial plaques to meet these requirements, while enabling you to access a design that works for you. We can even make wooden ashes caskets without screws.
Though we have a variety of solutions, our recommendations include wooden lawn memorials, wooden plaques fixed to oak posts with wooden dowels and oak crosses - all of which would make a fitting tribute for a loved one.
Wooden Caskets & Urns
Our wooden caskets and urns have been designed for cremated ashes. They are beautifully made from solid oak or mahogany and can be supplied with or without an engraved plaque. These can be brass, aluminium or acrylic laminate memorial plaques.
The wooden caskets are perfect for those wanting to keep the ashes of a loved one, although they are also used when burying ashes in a cemetery. For natural burial grounds our carpenters can create a casket without any metal fittings.
The lids are permanently fixed, and the ashes are placed into the casket from the bottom.
Woodland, Photo-Slot, Bamboo & Painted Wood Ashes Caskets
Woodland Ashes Caskets - Substancial wooden caskets individually made by our carpenters using wooden dowels. Ideal for green burial grounds - no metal used.
Photo Slot Oak Caskets - Made from high-quality solid oak, it includes a photo slot on the front. The top can be personalised with laser engraving or a plaque.
Bamboo Casket - Good value simple ashes caskets in four sizes for loved ones or pets. Crafted from sustainable, fast-growing bamboo, this is an eco-friendly casket.
Painted Wood Caskets - Made from wood based Tricoya which is exceptionally durable. We can also make these painted ash caskets to order in any size.
Rustic Wooden Memorials
If you're looking for a memorial with less formality, good sustainability or one that will blend well into natural surroundings, then the rustic wooden memorials may be what you are looking for. These pieces have a certain charm about them, as well as being a more affordable choice for tighter budgets. We love these memorials, and they receive just as much care and attention from our team as any of our others pieces.
Posts and Tree Stakes
Tree stakes are a popular memorial choice, understandably as we think it is a wonderful way to celebrate the life of a loved one, or mark their final resting place.
From simple wrought iron tree stakes and modern stakes on an angle to larger wooden tree stakes and plaque holders - we are able to craft a wide variety of stakes that may be a good fit for you.
While Enduring, Wood Requires More TLC for Lasting Tributes
While slate, granite, and metal memorials boast exceptional longevity, wooden memorials offer a beautiful, natural alternative. However, it's important to remember that wood deteriorates over time, especially when exposed to moisture. The lifespan of a wooden memorial depends on several factors:

- Wood Type: Some woods, like Iroko, are naturally more resistant to decay due to their inherent oils.
- Maintenance: Regular care, like oiling with Devon oil (a natural option!), significantly extends a wooden memorial's lifespan.
- Placement: Keeping the memorial off the ground minimizes exposure to moisture. We offer wooden posts with dowels for woodland burials. For ground placement, thicker Iroko (at least 90mm) is recommended. Important note: Burying wooden memorials into the ground is not advised.
