Oak is a heavy, durable timber with a very beautiful grain.

Although it is difficult to see in the photos, the beautiful grain of the oak does remain visable beneath the paint.

If you prefer to see less grain we can replace with sapele wood which is an environmentally friendly, sustainable fast growing hardwood. Another option is the wood based Tricoya board which is long lasting and cheaper.

Black and white painted oak signs are very traditional, but with the use of a modern font, their clean cut style would look very smart in any contemporary environment. They can be single sided house signs or doubled sided hanging signs. Standard colours black letters on white background, white letters on black background, gold letters on black background. We also have a grey - F&B Purbeck Stone and a pale green F&B Lichen as standard. Cream, heritage green and Farrow & Ball Estate No.84 green blue, Stiffkey Blue, French Grey among others are also available at £5 per order. See our Stock Colours. For colours we don't stock the cost is £55 per colour per order. We can match Farrow & Ball colours.

The paint we use is a two component polyurethane paint which is much more durable than standard brush on paints. It is not only much tougher and longer lasting, but is also more resilient to chemicals

Painted can be as small as 20mm and the cost includes up to 50 letters. Extra letters are £1.65 per 25. We have a large range of fonts to choose from - click here.  We create a stencil using your chosen font and the letters are then painted - white, black, Farrow & Ball Purbeck Stone (light grey) or Lichen (light green) as standard. Stock colours also available @ £5.
NB We do apply several coats of our tough commercial paint so the letters will feel very slightly raised to the touch.

An interesting technique is to paint the oak in a light coloured and then use the laser to etch in the lettering. The laser works by burning into the wood so the lettering and images are dark in colour.

This works very well where fine lines or detailed images are required. The cost is the same as painted lettering.

Painted Signs with Posts
Painted oak signs and painted posts have increased in popularity by huge amounts in the last year. While the signs and posts have a clean modern feel there is something very traditional about them. Normally posts come ready to be buried into the soil. (at least 450mm)  However we are sometimes asked for free standing fingerposts which our carpenter can create to order. Click here

Post with Arm for Hanging Signs
These can be made with oak, idigbo or softwood and are ideal for hanging signs. They are supplied complete with stainless steel fittings suitable for the sign of your choice. They can be painted black, white or to match the colour of your sign. The posts is 8 foot high and the arm is made to suit the sign.

Painted Framed Signs
These are an alternative painted solid oak sign. The frame is 30mm accoya wood and the internal panel is 6.5mm waterproof Tricoya Board. This wood based composite product is exceptionally stable, strong, durable and weatherproof. These can again be single sided wall mounted house name signs, or double sided hanging signs. We also make blank boards for other sign makers, or for you to paint your own lettering. All available portrait or landscape.
