Engraved Brass Plaques

Brass is a manmade material was first created about 7000 years ago and has been used for memorial plaques for hundreds of years. Its long-standing use makes it a truly traditional and timeless choice.  Brass has also been a popular material for engraved nameplates, adorning the front doors of grand townhouses, and professional establishments such as solicitors, dentists, and other city businesses. Not all brass is the same. At The Sign Maker we only use the best quaily engravers brass in 1.5 mm or 2 mm thickness

Engraved Plaques

When thinking about engraved plaques, brass often comes to mind. While brass is a fantastic material for plaques and signs, it does require regular polishing. At The Sign Maker, our engraving workshop offers many other materials for engraved plaques and signs. For example, stone-like Corian plaques are maintenance-free and highly durable. We also use acrylic laminate in various colours, black aluminium, and eco-friendly PaperStone, all suitable for outdoor use.

Fibreglass Business Signs

Fibreglass (GRP) have massive advantage over other sign systems. Although comparatively light, they are extremely strong and therefore resistant to vandalism and weathering.

The sign boards are manufactured to any RAL colour plus black and white. The colours are a shade guide only as the actual signs are much richer and brighter as you would expect from pigmented fibreglass

For the town house brass is traditional, both cast and engraved. Cast bronze is another classic material. Modern Hand Painted Cast House Signs

These signs are cast in one piece using a very high quality polyurethane. This is an extremely tough hard wearing material which is solid, rigid and does not corrode.

It has a distinct advantage over cast metal in that the lettering is crisper and the motifs, logos and crests can be much more intricate.

Outdoor Notice Boards

Given that notice boards are possibly a more traditional sign, we enjoy giving these signs The Sign Maker touch. From notice boards to menu cases and poster cases - we craft our notice boards to last in the outdoor elements; all strong, secure and waterproof. Headers are available if required, and we can supply posts for support.

Painted Wooden Signs

At The Sign Maker, we are experiencing a revival in our painted wood signs which blend traditional craftsmanship with modern look. In contrast to the prevalence of vinyl signage, painted wood signs bring a distinct warmth and character. We use various timbers for the painted wooden sign, including Oak, Sapele, and Tricoya (a waterproof wood-based board), and paint them with most RAL colours plus Farrow and Ball matches. These signs are perfect as double-sided hanging signs, house signs, and entrance signs on posts.

To ensure lasting beauty and durability, we use a durable polyurethane paint mixed with a hardener which provides exceptional protection against the elements.

In the last few years, including a photo on a plaque has become increasingly popular. Seeing the person or a beloved pet on the plaque certainly makes the plaque extra special.  On this page, we have listed the various options available to you.  All are designed to be used outdoors or indoors.

The full-colour options resist fading, but you can extend their lifespan even more by placing them out of the strongest sunlight. Posts for Signs Wooden, Steel and Aluminium

This page features a selection of posts, but our carpenters and blacksmiths can create custom designs to meet your specific needs. We primarily use oak and iroko for wooden posts. Oak is a beautiful, strong, and long-lasting timber, while iroko, similar to teak, is rich in natural oils, requiring less maintenance. For painted wooden posts, we use sapele, the most stable hardwood. Additionally, we offer a range of metal posts, including handcrafted steel and standard round aluminum.

Rigid Projecting Signs & Brackets

We have a good selection of rigid projecting signs and sign brackets. These are similar to the hanging signs in many ways but they do not swing in the wind. There are many shapes, sizes and styles to suit all budgets and situations.

The signs can be cut vinyl, full colour printed or painted. The materials include the wood based board - tricoya, 19mm PVC and 3mm aluminium

Sign Boards

We craft a range of sign boards made from PVC, Aluminium Composite, Aluminium, Painted Tricoya, Fibreglass, and Clear Acrylic. Our custom sign boards are particularly popular with businesses and commercial properties because we design them with their environment in mind, ensuring they last as long as possible.

These pieces can include small text, photos and printed designs. As well as being very durable, they are also resistant to graffiti and acids.

Wheel Covers

Wheel covers are a great way to personalise your vehicle - particularly for businesses looking to showcase what they do on the go. Available as blank wheel covers, with stock designs or tailor-made for you, we can craft a wheel cover as a full-colour print, single colour cut vinyl design or full wrap that neatly covers the whole disk.

Our product range includes soft wheel covers in seven different vinyl fabric colours. These can be tailored to any size, either plain or with a printed design.

Wooden Signs in Various Timbers

At The Sign Maker workshops in Devon, we have a barn stocked with a wide range of timber in various types and thicknesses, where we craft wooden sign blanks. From small house signs to large business signage, we can create them all.

Oak is our most popular choice for wooden signs, and we believe it to be the most beautiful timber. However, Sapele is also a favorite for its rich, deep red hue, and Iroko is valued for its high oil content, which makes it low-maintenance.

In addition, we offer Chestnut, Cherry, Red Grandis & Opepe,Red Cedar and Douglas Fir - the last two are both excellent choices for outdoor signs which needs little care. Red Cedar is known for its natural resistance to decay and beautiful grain, while Douglas Fir provides strength and durability for larger signs.

Our skilled carpenters craft each of the wooden sign on posts with precision, tailoring every detail to your specifications. From the choice of timber to the fixing method and dimensions, you have complete control over the design to ensure the finished wooden sign suits your needs.
